Mazda6 Mazda CX-3 Discontinued

The Mazda model lineup is always evolving to meet the needs for our customers, as well as the world around us. It was announced earlier this year that it will be the last for the Mazda6 sedan and Mazda CX-3 crossover in the United States.

And we felt that there was no better way to say goodbye to both of these award-winning Mazda vehicles than diving into the history of each of them and how they will pave the way for our brand’s future.

Mazda CX-3 History

History of the MAZDA CX-3

We’re going to start with the Mazda CX-3, which is the newer of the two having been unveiled at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. It joined our lineup as part of the 2016 model year as the subcompact SUV of choice and was slotted below the Mazda CX-5 & Mazda CX-9.

Due to its size, it combined the versatility & capability of a SUV with the efficiency of a sedan. It also gave customers a suite of sought-after features including available i-ACTIV AWD®, along with the full range of Skyactiv® technology and our brand’s distinguished KODO - Soul of Motion design theme.

Over the years, this Mazda received numerous recognitions including:

  • Red Dot Design Award in Germany
  • Car of the Year in Thailand
  • Yahoo Autos Savvy Ride of the Year
  • IIHS Top Safety Pick+
  • NHTSA 5-Star Overall Safety Rating
  • ALG Residual Value Award
  • World Car Design of the Year Finalist

The legacy of the Mazda CX-3 can be seen in another model in our lineup: the Mazda CX-30. Both share a similar size, feature suite and gas savings and while the former will only be here while supplies last, the latter will continue to drive down the road that the Mazda CX-3 paved into 2022 & beyond.

Mazda6 History

History of the MAZDA6

The Mazda6 has a much more storied history, which first hit the road in the 2003 model year in Sport Sedan, 5-Door (hatchback) and Sport Wagon body styles. Major happenings that occurred during this model’s first generation including the introduction of Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission for 2005, a facelift in the same year & the high-performance Mazdaspeed6 for 2006.

The second generation of the Mazda6 was unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show and debuted in the US for the 2009 model year as a sedan only. Highlights of this model include:

  • Roofline resembling a coupe
  • Redesign touting a sportier style
  • Revised chassis platform resulting in improved electrically assisted steering
  • New 2.5L 4-cylinder engine
  • 6.1-second 0-60 mph acceleration time with the 3.7L V6

The 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show was where the third-generation Mazda6 was first seen, which arrived in NJ for the 2014 model year with the returning 184-hp 2.5L Skyactiv®-G 4-cylinder engine under the hood. Bluetooth hands-free calling & audio streaming and keyless entry with push-button start came standard in most models, with the i-ELOOP regenerative braking system being introduced.

The 2018 Mazda6 received a facelift that overhauled the design of this sedan inside & out and was the first to offer Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. It was also the last model year to offer manual transmission as an option.

Our Mazda6 Inventory

As the Mazda6 rides off into the sunset, we’re not currently sure what kind of vehicle is going to replace it. We do suspect that it could be an electric car since that is how the automotive industry as a whole & our brand are trending, with the debut of the zero-emissions Mazda MX-30 BEV coming this fall.

The Mazda6 and Mazda CX-3 will only be available here in North New Jersey for as long as we have them in stock. Contact our team today to schedule a test drive of either vehicle!
