IIHS tests evaluate two aspects of safety: crashworthiness — how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash — and crash avoidance and mitigation — technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity. The IIHS awards those who earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests, as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention qualify for 2017 Top Safety Pick status.

Attaining Top Safety Pick+ Status

In order for a vehicle to be honored as a “Top Safety Pick +”, the vehicle must earn the highest rating of “Good” for 2017 in five crashworthiness tests; an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating for front crash prevention; and an “Acceptable” or “Good” headlight rating.
