A totally autonomous all-wheel drive system, i-ACTIV AWD® combines excellent all-road ability with piece of mind. First introduced in the 2013 Mazda CX-5, the available Mazda predictive i-ACTIV AWD® system is currently offered in the new Mazda CX-3, Mazda CX-5, and Mazda CX-9.
Advantage of i-ACTIV AWD® Over 4WD
Predictive i-ACTIV AWD® uses 27 different sensors to monitor everything from exterior temperature to throttle input and braking patterns, predicting when all-wheel drive may be necessary – monitoring over 200 times per second. By constantly monitoring different factors around the vehicle, i-ACTIV AWD® is able to predict upcoming conditions, allocating engine torque to the necessary wheel to maintain control, stability and forward momentum. Upon detection, the system optimizes torque distribution to help curb traction loss.
In normal driving conditions, 98% of torque is routed to the front wheels, however, if Mazda's i-ACTIV AWD® system detects just 1% wheel slippage, the system engages. Unlock four-wheel drive (4WD) systems found in numerous off-road vehicles that require the driver engages the transfer case with a lever or button, Mazda's all-wheel drive system is always engaged and is designed to be seamless in its operation which allows for smooth, controlled steering and throttle inputs.
