When Do You Need New Tires?

When you're traveling on the roads in and around Ramsey, NJ, you're going to want usable tires, especially during the wintertime when roads can get covered with snow and ice. But how do you when to get your tires replaced?

The Penny Test

It doesn't take any special equipment to make sure your tires are safe for your trip to Spring Valley. All you need is a penny.

Take your penny and flip it so that Abe Lincoln's head is pointing down. You can then take your penny and place Lincoln's head into different parts of the tire's tread grooves. Look at the penny at eye level and take note of what you see. If you see the top of Lincoln's hair every time, then your tires are worn more than 2/32 of an inch and you need new tires.

Why Worry?

Tire tread wear is not something you can just overlook. If your tires are excessively worn, then your car may lose traction in snow or rain, two types of inclement weather common to Ridgewood. Not only that, but worn tires can be an indication of other problems in your car.

  • If the outer section of your tire is knobby and worn, then there may be an issue with the toe-in value.
  • If the tire is worn different in several areas, then it's time for a wheel alignment.
  • Excessive wear present on one side of the tire indicates the camber angle is not correct.
  • If you notice on your drives in Chestnut Ridge that the center tread is much more worn than other parts of the tire, then your tire may be overinflated.
  • If the shoulders of your tire are excessively worn, it may be underinflated.

Take Action

If you notice any of these issues as you're driving around Airmont, take action and visit our service center before it's too late. Excessive tread wear, overinflation, underinflation, poor wheel alignment, and all the other problems covered above can cause accidents which can lead to totaled cars and unnecessary hospital bills.
